2nd Annual Crawling with the Creeps

For the second year in a row, the Avondale neighborhood bar scene will host the wildest Halloween block party and costume contest west of the Ashley River and perhaps all of Charleston. While the actual costume contest presented by Southern Eagle beer distributors doesn't get underway at each bar until 9PM of Friday evening, even the most novice of trick-or-treaters know that the fun begins with the setting sun. This will be especially true at Mellow Mushroom where we will be tapping kegs of Widmer Okto and New Belgium Tour de Fall that will run all night for $4 pints. In addition to these two brews, we will be featuring 'taste the rainbow' menu of $1 Jello Shots as well as a few more bartender specials throughout the evening.

As always, we will have $5 Irish Car Bombs available for those looking to power their way into the evening, and from 4-7, our regular Happy Hour Specials will be available: $4 drafts, $3 House Liquors (Jim Beam, Svedka, Jaurez, Gordon's, and Cruzan), $4 Fireball, $4 Rumpleminz, $4 Goldschlager, and $0.50 wings).

We encourage everyone to have a great time but to remember to enjoy responsibly. If you need transportation, please ask your server or bartender to call you a cab as we would be more than happy to help you get home safely.

More about the New Belgium Tour de Fall

New Belgium's Tour de Fall is the perfect balance between a hoppy pale ale and the malty, caramel flavors of fall. Like many pales, the beer starts of with a distinct bitterness but transitions into a malty middle to finish with a light, crisp hoppiness. This is the perfect beer to balance out the many malty ales that dominate fall and are certainly present through the cold winter months. Be sure to add this to your list while its available.

More about the Widmer Okto
The Widmer Okto Ale is brewed specifically for the Oktoberfest season. It has a maltiness and smooth caramel flavor. It is only 5.2% ABV, which means you can have a more than a few before your highly elaborate costume starts becoming overtly risque. Beer club aspirers w bready ill want to be sure to get one added to your list as it will no longer be available at Mellow (or anywhere) after this weekend.

More about Crawling with the Creeps
The Roost Bar N’ Grille, Pearlz Oyster Bar, Voodoo Tiki Bar, Gene’s Haufbrau, Mellow Mushroom, and Oak Barrel Tavern will hold individual costume contests at 9 p.m., each one awarding a $100 gift card to the best costume. Natty Greene's comes to the Holy City

Charleston has a lasting tradition of quality craftsmanship, and for many years now, it has become widely known for its rich southern cuisine and emerging craft beer and spirit culture. In addition to the numerous accolades from local chefs, restaurants, and breweries in town, Charleston is seeing an influx of companies seeking to capitalize on this burgeoning foodie destination.

With legislation sitting in Columbia that aims to loosen Prohibition Era regulation, big names such as Stone Brewing Co. from California and Deschutes from Oregon could be setting their sites on the Lowcountry as they are looking to expand their operations to the East Coast. Moreover, more craft brands are seeing Charleston as a key market as they expand regional distribution. One such rising star setting its sites on Charleston is Natty Greene's Brewery of Greensboro, NC.

Like many early brewers, owners Chris Lester and Kanye Fisher honed their craft operating as a brewpub before realizing the brand's distribution potential. The brewery surged into  the retail market and quickly became Harris Teeter of North Carolina's most widely sold 6-pack. Hailing from North Carolina, the south's largest craft beer state, brands such as Foothills, Highland, and Duck-Rabbit may be more familiar to Charlestonians for now, but after tonight's unveiling of 3 Taps of Natty Greene's at Mellow Mushroom in West Ashley, that will certainly being to change.

From its humble beginnings as a neighborhood theater, the Mellow Mushroom in West Ashley will be the stage of Natty Greene's South Carolina debut. On site from 5:30-7, representatives from the brewery will be on site to share their story and craft (as well as some brewery gear if you arrive early). Mellow will be featuring three ales, the Southern Pale Ale (ABV 5.2%), the Elm Street English IPA (ABV 6.4%) and the Buckshot Amber Ale (ABV 4.8%). While the the Southern Pale Ale will be on tap throughout May as the Beer of the Month, don't miss your opportunity to have a pint of these other two tonight.

Following the event, stick around for our weekly Pop-Culture Trivia hosted by the City Paper from 8-10PM. 1st Place $50, 2nd Place $25, 3rd $10, and we have craft beer flowing from 30 Taps, so everybody wins.
